Did you know that there is so much more to nuts — the sometimes plain, savoury snack — than meets the eye? Well, if there’s anyone who knows it best, it’s the team at Charlesworth Nuts! Using exciting seasoning, different cooking methods and delicious coatings, they’ve created a new reputation for nuts.
Chatting to Store Manager, Toni, we learnt that an important factor in making the roasted nuts taste so good, is that they are cooked fresh on site every day. In fact, if she could only eat one product from the store for the rest of her life, it would be those that come straight out of the oven.
“I would choose the Hot Chilli Macadamias, freshly cooked, as I love them. If I had to choose a pre-made product, I would choose Heart ‘n’ Soul. It has a beautiful mix of dried fruit and dark chocolate, so you get the best of both worlds — healthy and cheeky!”
Toni has worked at Charlesworth Nuts for many years. In her time at the centre, she’s encountered some very interesting requests and met some customers who are now daily regulars!
“I once had a mother order only pink smarties for her child. I spent ages picking them out of the mix of other colours!” she said. “And, we have many regulars, but there are two that stand out. One gentleman comes in every day and buys $4 of raw cashews. No matter who is working, he calls us the A-team! There is also a couple who come in and order 500g to 1kg of Hot Chilli Mix. They love the service and the fact that I make it up for them straight away.”
When she’s not making customers smile with her awesome service or cooking up a fresh batch of delicious nuts, Toni can be found grabbing lunch at Viet Menu — “the staff are lovely, and they make the best Banh Mi rolls” — or enjoying some macrame at home.
“It is a bit old-fashioned, but I find it therapeutic. The end result is satisfying, and you can make beautiful gifts for people!”
When it comes to cooking, Toni isn’t just an expert in nuts. When asked what she would prepare for a dinner party and who she would invite, she had some impressive answers.
“I’d serve oyster and prawn cocktail for the entrée, Atlantic salmon with fresh salad for the main, and pavlova for dessert. I’d invite David Attenborough for the fascinating conversation, Enrique Iglesias for entertainment and some eye-candy, and finally my dad who passed away. I’d give anything to have one last meal with him.”
We think that sounds like a pretty special dinner party.
So, the next time you’re in the centre, make sure you say hi to Toni at Charlesworth Nuts. You can treat your tastebuds to a nutty snack, some dried fruit or chocolate, or peruse gorgeous gift section. Better yet, just do it all! You’ll be supporting a family-owned business.
