A change of season is a great time to refresh your home’s interior.

The autumn weather invites cosy and welcoming colours that interior stylist, Jess Hislop (@jesshislopstylist) loves to explore and incorporate into her own styling. Get inspired with her interior design ideas that combine this year’s top trending seasonal colours with rich textures.

The autumn colour palette

While the outside air is getting cooler and the days shorter, inside your home is the perfect place to embrace a more comforting palette. Jess takes inspiration from colours found in nature, like the leaves as they start to turn, and suggests leaning into three key hues:

  • Ochre, for its rich, earthy yellow that grounds a space.
  • Caramel, which acts as a soft, warm neutral that brings in sophisticated sweetness.
  • Mulberry, as its deep, luxurious reddish-purple adds a touch of drama and romance.

These autumnal hues work harmoniously together, offering a sense of layered richness that remains inviting and intentionally balanced.

Layering with texture

Texture is key when giving your home an autumn refresh. It is the element that does most of the heavy lifting, adding depth and visual interest without needing major furniture changes. Jess recommends focusing on tactile textiles and thoughtful accents when it comes to transforming your space. Some key items include:

  • Throws: A plush throw is a great way to introduce chunky textures in those seasonal colours. Go for a lighter coloured blanket from Canopy Home Fashion and drape it over your sofa to instantly invite warmth and a cosy vibe to your sofa.
  • Cushions: Mix and match fabrics, such as a velvets and soft linens, in deep mulberry and plum colours to add contrast. Bring in another level of layering with designs on the pillows, like raised patterns or polka dots, which you can find at House.
  • A touch of shine: Don't be afraid to bring in a subtle shiny element. This could be a ceramic vase with a metallic glaze from Harris Scarfe or a polished glass candle holder. These touches tie in and add another level of sophistication to the entire room.

Jess also highlights how curated objects can help to build a story in your space. Look for pieces that have an organic or slightly imperfect quality. These could include:

  • Ceramics: Ceramic bowls or vases from Kmart are perfect for adding both texture and a hint of colour to flat surfaces like shelves, tables, or island benches.
  • Glass: Use tinted or textured glass pieces, such as decanters or a sculptural vase like those found at Big W. These are great in locations where they can capture and throw coloured light around the room at certain times of the day.
  • Natural elements: Incorporate natural materials and organic forms into your styling. The unexpected element of seasonal fruit, such as apples, figs, grapefruit, mandarins, oranges, pears, or pomegranates, placed on a coffee table or in a woven basket from House, adds some autumnal earthiness.
  • Florals: A carefully chosen bouquet can make the whole palette come alive. Instead of traditional bright colours, choose blooms that echo your rich seasonal tones. Think deep burgundy dahlias, rust-coloured chrysanthemums, or branches heavy with berries. Place this arrangement in a striking vase and position it where it can anchor the room's new aesthetic.

These are subtle changes, but when your space is thoughtfully layered with rich colours and varied textures, the atmosphere speaks for itself. Find your new favourite autumnal styling pieces at Colonnades today.
